Larry Sawyer was the adoptive father of Peyton Sawyer who raised her alone after the death of his wife, Anna. He was often away because of his work but he and Peyton maintain a close relationship and talked frequently. He was very over-protective of his daughter and, to an extent, her best friend, Brooke Davis as well.

Character arc[]

Season 1[]

Larry first appeared in the middle of season 1 and was caught as a surprise by Lucas. He went on a 3-week trip instead of a longer trip because he wanted to stay with his daughter. A storm hits and his transport goes missing.

Season 3[]

Larry came back home after Peyton was shot. He stayed for a longer time to take care of her. He began to develop a bond with Lucas Scott.

Later life[]

Larry continued working away to earn money for himself as well as his daughter when she left to pursue a career in L.A.

His career led to him very rarely returning to Tree Hill and living mainly on boats. This also led to him missing his daughter's wedding and the birth of his granddaughter

Relationships[]

  • Anna Sawyer
    • Start Up: Before "Pilot" (1x01)
    • Marriage: Before "Pilot" (1x01)
      • Although never officially separated, Anna died in a car crash

Trivia[]

  • Larry is the only character to be portrayed by two different actors during the series' nine-year run.
    • Originated by actor Thomas Ian Griffith in season one, the role was recast upon the character's reintroduction in season three with actor Kevin Kilner. During an episode of the One Tree Hill rewatch podcast Drama Queens, actress Hilarie Burton (Peyton Sawyer) revealed the decision to recast Larry Sawyer was due to the fact the writers believed she and Griffith were "too flirty." During her conversation with her co-hosts Sophia Bush (Brooke Davis) and Bethany Joy Lenz (Haley James Scott), however, the three former co-stars argued this wasn't rooted in reality but merely the writers' perception.[1]
