History[]

1980s[]

During the early to mid-1980s, Anna Sawyer was known to be a cheerleader for the Tree Hill Ravens. This was revealed by her adoptive daughter, Peyton Sawyer, who stated the reasoning behind her decision to join the cheer squad was because her mother had been a cheerleader when she was in high school.

In the late 1980s, Karen Roe and Shari Smith were members of the Ravens cheer squad, with the former serving as team captain. During her tenure as cheer captain, Karen dated the captain of the basketball team, Dan Scott.

2000s[]

Early 2000s[]

A few years prior to the series premiere, Taylor James was a member of the Ravens cheer squad. During that time, she served as the squad's captain while her younger sister Haley was in middle school. However, she was later kicked off the squad after her junior year due to her excessive partying.

After Taylor's tenure as cheer captain, she was replaced by Morgan Finley. According to fellow student Faith Banks, Morgan was popular among the school's social hierarchy but was known to bully several of her classmates. Under her direction, the cheerleaders targeted Faith and her friends before Lucas Scott stood up to them, after which Morgan and her teammates directed their attention toward Lucas. During this time, Brooke Davis was taken under Morgan's wing to assume her position as cheer captain once Morgan graduated.

The Ravens cheerleaders practicing for the upcoming Sparkle Classic competition

Upon their introduction in the first season, the Tree Hill Ravens cheerleaders served as an integral component of the Ravens basketball season. Captained by high school junior Brooke Davis, members of the cheer squad were among the popular clique at Tree Hill High School and were frequently seen in attendance at events associated with the basketball team, including fundraisers and non-sanctioned house parties.

Whereas Brooke viewed cheerleading as an important part of her life in high school, her best friend, Peyton Sawyer, was less enthusiastic of her position on the squad. This was remarked upon by Lucas Scott, who couldn't understand why Peyton had even become one, observing that she was "the least cheery person" he knew. Brooke and Peyton were frequently shown observing Nathan and Lucas, both at basketball games and during practice. On the anniversary of her mother's death, it was at cheerleading practice that Peyton got into a fight with Brooke calling her life 'pathetic' and storming off, presumably meaning that being a popular cheerleader meant nothing to her in the scheme of things. After being betrayed by her best friend and her boyfriend, Brooke becomes a tyrannical captain in preparation for the Sparkle Classic, freely admitting to Karen that she threw herself so wholeheartedly into cheering because she didn't want to think about the other things that were going on in her life. At the competition, Theresa, one of the cheerleaders comes down with chicken pox and gets sent home, unable to compete. Peyton begs Haley to fill in for her, and, although skeptical, she eventually does. The squad ends up staying up all night to practice, and Peyton comes up with new music, after Mouth informs them that three other squads are using the same song (after his performance of the other squads routine.) Although they don't go on to win the Sparkle Classic, Brooke does receive a trophy for Best Original Choreography. ("Spirit in the Night")
